Whether you’ve experienced scratched floors or pet accident clean-up, you know that pets and floors don’t always get along. But for most pet owners, their pets are a very important part of the family. So how do you get flooring that works for the comfort of a puppy and also holds up against the wear and tear?

The more affordable option would be carpeted floors – but they can have some major drawbacks. Carpets tend to wear quickly and can absorb stains and odors very easily.  On another hand, hardwood flooring can scratch, stain, and absorb moisture, making it an impractical choice as well.

For this reason, stone or tile floors might just be the best option. Let’s discuss why.

Stone Flooring

Stone flooring is an excellent choice for pet owners for a number of reasons.  Stone is very scratch resistant and any scratches that might occur are very difficult to notice. Plus, it does not absorb moisture or odors like carpets and wood flooring do, making it very easy to clean up if your pets have an accident.  Your house can stay smelling fresh and clean.

Although it can be expensive, granite is the best choice for a durable floor because it is the hardest of the natural stones.  However, softer stones such as marble, travertine, and slate are still good options, although they might require a bit more maintenance.

Tile Flooring

Much like stone flooring, tile flooring offers many of the same benefits including scratch resistance, durability, and odor and moisture control. The difference is that tile can generally be cheaper than stone flooring. However, the downside to stone and tile flooring is the fact that they are hard and cold, making for an uncomfortable place for pets to lie down.  Easily overcome this with throw rugs and pet beds.

At the end of the day, you’ll be grateful you went with a hard floor that doesn’t absorb pet accidents.

Both stone and tile flooring offer great benefits for pets and are very durable surfaces.  The main difference will be in price and personal taste.  Both options are extremely suitable for pet owners.  Regardless of which flooring you choose, it is recommended that stone and tile flooring be professionally cleaned every 12-18 months to ensure they look their best and are clean and sanitized.
